The Mandell JCC has partnered with B’nai Tikvoh-Sholom (BTS) to create The Neshama Center for Lifelong Learning. The Hebrew word “neshama” means “soul” and is related to the word “neshima,” meaning “breath.”
At Neshama, we invite people of all backgrounds to take a breather from the
fast- paced world in which we live, and join us for inspiring, creative, joyful Jewish learning.

You done good! Real good! So many of you joined us, and millions around the Globe, for Good Deeds Day last month.
From honoring our 'hometown heroes' -- the police, firefighters and ambulance drivers -- to 'cooking for a cause' and raising awareness about hunger in our community, we were simply overwhelmed by the outpouring of friends wanting to do so much 'good.'
ECC Mitzvah
If happiness blooms from within, then our ECC children were positively radiating as they helped spread so much 'happy' last month at the Hebrew Center for Health & Rehabilitation while finishing their Mitzvah project.
During NAEYC’s 'Week of the Young Child,' the children decorated pots and planted each one with some beautiful flowers donated by Moscarillo's Garden Shop West Hartford.
They delivered them to the Hebrew Center...sending flowers their way to brighten their day!

Marlyn Bame
Member Services Specialist
Her smile is often the first thing you see when you start your day at the JCC, and many of you who are here on Fridays look forward to the 'extra special' greeting from Marlyn Bame, who has been a dedicated member of the JCC team for 15 years serving as a Member Service Specialist.
"There is something for everyone here at the JCC, and my job is to help the members and guests find that something, and ensure that they enjoy their experiences here with us. I love interacting with members and making them laugh, I would say I’m a clown at heart."
There are a few things most people do not know about me. I have twin daughters and I was a member of the first Women’s Basketball Team at the University of Hartford. I also once worked for the “Singing Messenger Company” where I delivered singing telegrams.
My themed music Fridays started on 5/5/2006…Cinco De Mayo! A fellow staff member wanted to celebrate and asked me to help with music and decorations. Needless to say, I wore a serape, sombrero, a black mustache and played music all day! I have been doing this every Friday since.
Rachel Stein
Member Engagement Director
Also a fixture at the front desk, making sure everyone's needs are met, is Rachel Stein, who has been the Member Engagement Director for five years.
As an Engagement Director I am always in contact with members making sure their suggestions and “stories” are heard. My goal is to make sure that our members have a meaningful and valued time at the JCC.
The JCC is near and dear to my heart, I grew up at the Weinstein JCC in Richmond, VA. The memories made back then, with best friends to this day, remind me all the time just how lucky I am to work in a place which has always meant so much to me.
Recently, I applied to attend the Jewish Leadership Training Institute, during which I would attend three program retreats, participate in regular online learning, work with a mentor, and design and implement projects that will build collaboration and strengthen Jewish life in their community.
GOOD NEWS! I will be attending! I am very excited for this opportunity to further my knowledge, and for the opportunity to take my career to the next level.
