Brian Ruyle
Assistant Aquatics Director
For nearly 7 years, Assistant Aquatics Director Brian Ruyle has taught hundreds of members how to swim. When he’s not in the water demonstrating how to float on one’s back, he can be found clutching his red rescue/torpedo buoy walking the pool deck in his role as lifeguard. In addition, Brian also leads a Cardio Splash and a Water Exercising Class. During the summer, he is known as the ‘everything at the pool” guy at Camp Shalom. “I just love helping kids work through their fears and turn the water into a place of joy.
In just a couple of weeks, Brian will be trading in the water for a bike as he heads off to represent the JCC in the annual Israel Ride.
“Each year my JCC colleagues return from the trip just raving about it. After I read about the terrific work the Arava Institute does, I realized it was time to step up.”
Trying to nail down what Brian is most looking forward to on this trip might have one wondering if he’s spending a year in Israel; “Spending an afternoon on the beach in Tel Aviv, touring Jerusalem and Petra and Wadi Rum, seeing the Arava Institute, the long downhill ride (coast) into Eilat, swimming in the Gulf of Aqaba, making so many new friends and Bonnie Bassett has assured me I will just LOVE the food!”
After more than 30 years without owning a bicycle, Brian has appreciated the time he’s missed away from this sport. “As hard as it’s been getting my old muscles to cooperate, in a lot of ways, it’s been like getting reacquainted with an old friend after a 30 year absence – challenging to get caught up, but oh so familiar and comforting.”
Brian and his colleagues Farrah Mead and Dave LaPorte will be leaving for the Israel on October 18th. We wish all of them safe travels and can’t wait to hear, what will surely be, their incredible stories.
