Paul Freyer of the University of Hartford’s Hartt School, will accompany candidates who must bring their sheet music or score in proper key. A sign-up sheet will be available upon arrival. A photo and résumé are required. Auditions are open to students and the general public, all faiths and backgrounds are welcome.
The Outrageous Sophie Tucker focuses on the tumultuous life and career of Sophie Tucker, Hartford’s most famous daughter and iconic vaudeville superstar. Before Mae West, Marilyn Monroe, Bette Midler, Madonna and Lady Gaga, Sophie Tucker was the first woman to dazzle her audiences with a bold, bawdy and brassy style unlike any other previous performer.
Using all of “The Last of the Red Hot Mamas” 400+ personal scrapbooks and Sophie’s early recordings, Susan and Lloyd Ecker retrace Tucker’s 60 year show business career. Featuring Tony Bennett, Barbara Walters, Michael Feinstein, Carol Channing, Shecky Greene and Bruce Vilanch, among others.
