The Mandell JCC Hartford Jewish Film Festival will hold an open audition to select an entertainer to perform at the March 12, 2015 Opening Night Connecticut Premiere of The Outrageous Sophie Tucker. This new documentary profiles Hartford’s famous Red-Hot Mama,  the vaudeville superstar whose bold, brassy style paved the way for today’s singing legends.

Candidates (age 15 and above) should prepare 16 bars of an iconic song from Sophie Tucker’s repertoire and  a brief (1-2 minute) comic monologue or audience interaction routine that best expresses Sophie’s larger-than- life stage persona. Paul Freyer of the University of Hartford’s Hartt School, will accompany candidates who must bring their sheet music or score in proper key. A sign-up sheet will be available upon  arrival. A photo and résumé are required. Auditions are open to students and the general public, all faiths and backgrounds are welcome.

The Outrageous Sophie Tucker focuses on the tumultuous life and career of Sophie Tucker, Hartford’s most famous daughter and iconic vaudeville superstar. Before Mae West, Marilyn Monroe, Bette Midler, Madonna and  Lady Gaga, Sophie Tucker was the first woman to dazzle her audiences with a bold, bawdy and brassy style unlike any other previous performer.

Using all of “The Last of the Red Hot Mamas” 400+ personal scrapbooks and Sophie’s early recordings, Susan and  Lloyd Ecker retrace Tucker’s 60 year show business career. Featuring Tony Bennett, Barbara Walters, Michael Feinstein, Carol Channing, Shecky Greene and Bruce Vilanch, among others.
