Stress Management

Stress has been implicated in the onset of diabetes and can make it more difficult to control your diabetes, potentially disrupting how well insulin works.  The American Diabetes Association recommends that people with diabetes take care of their mind just as much as they do their body.  Meditation, breath work and other holistic techniques can help calm the body and mind.
Massage therapy - improves circulation which in turn, improves the cells’ insulin uptake.  If there is a thickening of a patient’s connective tissue caused by increased blood sugars, massage will help to increase mobility and tissue elasticity that has been hindered by that thickening effect.  Massage is also known for its relaxing effects which release endorphins, calm the nervous system, and reduce the stress hormones -positively effecting blood sugar. Guided Relaxation - Can bring about a relaxation response reducing stress and enhancing your body’s ability to regulate your blood sugar levels.

M-technique - Uses light touch to induce relaxation and aid in stress relief.

Hypnotherapy - Positive affirmations can focus thoughts away from discomfort and bring about a relaxation response reducing stress and enhancing your body’s ability to regulate your blood sugar levels.

Acupuncture - Has been shown to improve nerve function in patients with sluggish bowels (gastroparesis) due to diabetic changes, and can offer relief from chronic pain and neuropathy.

Yoga - Has been found to lower blood sugar levels in several ways: by lowering cortisol and adrenal levels, encouraging weight loss, and improving sensitivity to the effects of insulin.

Naturopathic Medicine - A comprehensive natural approach to address and prevent underlying risk factors of insulin resistance and diabetes. Taking an in-depth assessment of your current diet, micronutrient status, physical activity, hormone profile, and gut health allows for successful use of natural treatment options to improve stress and blood sugar levels.

Fitness

Exercise is a powerful way to take charge of your diabetes. Your blood sugar, your weight, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels can stay on track, and insulin works better.  But to exercise safely, you need to take a few precautions:  Start slow and increase  time and intensity gradually; monitor your blood sugar levels before and after exercise; and take care of your body by hydrating, attending to your feet, and protecting yourself from extreme temperatures.
