Surgery Preparation & Recovery

The amount of stress that a patient feels before surgery is significant and should not be taken lightly. Research indicates that patients who have lower levels of fear and anxiety prior to surgery are more likely to have positive experiences and outcomes.  They are also likely to require less anesthesia during surgery and less post-operative pain medication.  Calm patients often see fewer complications following surgery, expedited healing and recovery, and, thus require a shorter stay in the hospital.

Nutrition

Getting the right nutrition leading up to your surgery can have a major impact on your recovery and getting back on your feet. Hydrating, getting the right nutrients, and eating enough protein before your operation, helps support your immunity, promotes wound healing and assists in maintaining muscle mass, all of which can help you get back on your feet after your procedure.

Nutrition Consultation - A personalized diet and supplement approach to keeping your bones and joints healthy, and correcting any nutrient deficiencies that can lead to weakness or injury.

Stress Management

Surgery poses a catabolic stress on the body, which triggers inflammation and depletes nutrients; this, in turn, can impair the immune response and increase the risk of postoperative complications, especially infections.

“Prepare For Surgery, Heal Faster” workshop, book, and CD - Helps patients feel calmer going into surgery.   It also enables patients to visualize a successful surgery and full recovery, reduce pain medications, and decrease length of hospital stay.

Acupuncture - May reduce the amount of pain killers needed after surgery. This is important for the patient because it means the side effects associated with opioids such as nausea, vomiting and itching can be reduced.

Energy Therapy - Aids in relaxation, balances the body’s energy, and provides a sense of peace before or after surgery.  Energy can also help with emotional and physical releases.

Mind-body Techniques - Such as hypnosis and guided imagery, have helped many patients successfully prepare for surgery and experience a more relaxed, faster, and more comfortable recuperation time.

Massage Therapy - Helps you release muscular tension in preparation for surgery.  After surgery, massage is energizing when you are feeling depleted and soothing for your pain and discomfort. It also lowers blood pressure, increases blood flow (especially venous return), awakens dormant capillaries which expand, and eases breathing by relaxing muscles used to breathe.

Fitness

Being in decent shape prior to surgery allows individuals to better tolerate a surgical procedure, have fewer post-operative complications and demonstrate better functional, psychological, social and surgical outcomes.  In addition, specific exercises can aid in faster recovery and less complications after surgery.
