Bringing the Magic of Camp to Kids Who Need It Most

When a child is facing treatment, the last thing they should feel is alone or afraid. That's why we created Sunrise on Wheels — a one-of-a-kind program that brings the joy, energy, and wonder of camp directly to pediatric oncology units at Connecticut Children's Medical Center.

Julie Olson Adams, our Sunrise on Wheels coordinator, and her volunteers arrive with a vibrant, rainbow-colored trunk overflowing with toys, games, crafts, and activities — transforming hospital hallways and rooms into spaces filled with laughter and possibility. What might otherwise be a difficult and scary day becomes something a child can actually look forward to.

We believe healing happens best when the whole family is supported. Siblings are celebrated and included, so no one feels left out or forgotten. Parents and caregivers get a meaningful moment to breathe, knowing their child is engaged, smiling, and in caring hands. Our Wheels team works hand-in-hand with hospital staff, providing personalized one-on-one engagement that complements the incredible care already happening at CCMC.

Sunrise on Wheels isn't just a distraction — it's connection, creativity, and joy delivered right to the children at the hospital, one visit at a time.

Sunrise on Wheels at Connecticut Children's Medical Center is proudly managed by the Mandell Jewish Community Center, bringing the JCC's longstanding commitment to caring, inclusive programming to children and families. Through this partnership, the Mandell JCC extends its mission beyond its walls — delivering community, warmth, and connection straight to the hospital or clinic bedside.

Sunrise on Wheels is a program of Sunrise Association, a nonprofit dedicated to bringing the transformative experience of camp to children with cancer and their siblings — free of charge.
